COVID-19 Updates

We implemented new COVID-19 safety procedures in the summer and have made adjustments to benefit all those on campus. These include:

  • Physical Distancing - Safe distancing (6 feet apart) has been implemented. Homework Studio desks are appropriately spaced. Hallways and stairways are for passing, not for mingling. There are floor markers in several campuses to indicate direction of travel and serve as reminders for safe distancing. Some campuses have enter-only and exit-only doors.
  • Face Coverings - Masks are required prior to students entering the campus. Brightmont Academy will provide a face covering for those who have forgotten to bring their own. For now, face coverings will be worn throughout the campus, including in the classroom. All teachers and staff members are also masked.
  • Hygiene - Students should frequently wash their hands. Sanitizer is available in many areas of our campuses including entrances, classrooms, and common areas. Students should avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Illness - Students should stay home if they are sick. Each campus will have a touchless thermometer on hand. Brightmont Academy reserves the right to use a touchless thermometer. If a child tests positive for a fever, they will be sent home and may not return to campus without a doctor's note.
  • Visitors/Parents on Campus - An appointment is either mandatory or preferred to come into our campuses. Students are encouraged to enter and exit the facilities on their own. Parents who are waiting outside to pick up their child can call the campus.
  • Cleaning - Each campus has been and will continue to be cleaned by a 3rd party on a regular basis. All soft, porous surfaces that could come in contact with skin have been removed. All classrooms and classroom devices are disinfected after each student session.
  • Kitchen Use - There is restricted us of the kitchen. The water fountain/dispenser is out of service. Staff and students need to bring their own food and drink, go off campus for meals, or get delivery. Students who choose to order lunch for delivery will be responsible for meeting the delivery driver outside the campus. We have added a sanitizing station in the entryway.

Google Meet Practice Sessions

A green speech bubble with a video camera inside of it.

Students who are enrolled at Brightmont can get a Google Meet practice session by request. Whether the student will be attending Google Meet on a regular basis or only as needed, it is important students are prepared so that any sessions conducted via Google Meet will be as effective and productive as possible. Students may bring the computer they intend to use for Google Meet to the campus and practice connecting with a teacher via the email invite, using their camera and microphone, sharing their computer desktop in Google Meet, opening and editing Google Docs, and using Google Chat messages to communicate with their teachers. This proactive step provides an opportunity to solve technical issues and learn how to effectively use Google Meet prior to the student's first scheduled class session. Practice sessions may also take place at home, if needed.

Skill-Building Programs

Parents and students have been really grateful for our skill-building programs! This summer we have had many students enrolled to build their skills in math, reading, and writing. This is setting them up for success in their upcoming classes. Some students will continue their programs in the fall. Contact us if you'd like to enhance your child's education with one of our customized skill-building programs!

Private School in Miami Specializing in One-to-One Instruction for 1st-12th Grade Students Miami, FL — Estimates vary, but Florida typically hosts about one million snowbirds who stay for at least a month during the winter. Among those escaping the cold are families who want to ensure their children’s education continues without interruption—and Brightmont Academy’s Miami campus is ready to make that possible. To Campus Director Monica Torres, this seasonal migration represents a unique opportunity for students to learn in a new environment without disruption. “When we talk about snowbird families, we’re referring to those who relocate temporarily to Florida—often during the colder months—to escape harsh winter weather up north or abroad,” said Torres. “At Brightmont, we absolutely love welcoming these families to our South Miami campus. Because our school runs on a fully individualized, one-to-one model, students can continue their academic programs seamlessly while enjoying the SoFlo sunshine!” Brightmont’s one-to-one structure provides the kind of adaptability that traditional classroom settings often cannot. Each student learns directly with a teacher who adapts lessons to their schedule, pace, and location, making it ideal for families splitting time between states. “Our one-to-one structure is what makes this possible,” Torres explained. “Every student here learns with their own teacher, on their own schedule, and at their own pace. That means we can create a plan that perfectly fits a snowbird family’s timeframe—whether you’re here for a couple of months or the whole season. We can even blend learning between in-person and online if you’re planning to travel further or head back home mid-year. It’s truly flexible, so education never has to pause for the adventure.” This approach has already attracted families from across the country who are eager to take advantage of both Florida’s sunshine and Brightmont’s consistent academic model. “This year we have a family from Boston—they love the Florida sunshine but also want consistency in their son's education,” said Torres. “What’s special is how quickly students settle in here—our small, welcoming environment makes it easy to feel at home.” As the snowbird season begins, Torres encourages families to reach out early to learn how Brightmont can help make the move effortless. “I’d love to connect!” she said. “Reach out to schedule a visit or virtual consultation—we can talk through their plans and see how Brightmont can make the transition easy and meaningful for their child.” Brightmont Academy is located at 6101 SW 76th Street in Miami and is currently accepting enrollments. Brightmont Academy is an accredited private school that provides one-to-one instruction. One experienced teacher works with one student throughout every learning session. Customized full-time programs and individual courses are offered for grades 1-12. Students can also receive individualized tutoring for all 1-12 subjects, study skills, and test prep. Brightmont Academy has served thousands of students since 1999 and has 21 campuses in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, and Washington. The School Embraces Neurodiversity When choosing the right school the curriculum offered at the school must support students' needs. Some parents consider the use of adaptive digital platforms that support the needs of students who struggle with material management. Parents hope for Instruction from experts trained in adaptive curriculum and subjects so that they are prepared to adjust on the fly. Parents need to feel confident their child’s unique learning style will be supported and nurtured. Sensory Friendly Distraction-Reduced Spaces and Quiet Areas Small classrooms with a small teacher-to-student ratio allows for distraction-reduced spaces and quiet areas. Reducing distractions and disruptions from others allows the student in the smaller classroom to focus. In the 2020 research published in Science Direct students shared their experience about why they tended to gravitate towards the library in a traditional school. “The separate, more contained and manageable nature of the space is highlighted, as well as the more relaxed furnishings and homelike decor. The ‘quietness’ of the space is related to libraries typically being quiet places, but also…due to the presence of soft furnishings, carpets and books acting to dampen the sound. [Students} discuss the library as a social space, where they can ‘chat with friends’, in a more conducive environment than an invasive corridor or clattering classroom.” Focus and engagement are two important components to student success. When students feel at ease and successful they feel motivated to come back to school day after day and quench their curiosity in their academic subjects. With extensive experience in personalized education and a deep commitment to student success, Hale will lead the campus as it continues to support students through individualized learning plans and a nurturing academic environment. My decision to look closer was confirmed that very week when multiple former families mentioned Brightmont to me—a clear sign that I needed to know more.” Hale shared that her passion for student-centered learning is what drew her to this new role. “After closing my microschool, I reflected on my next steps, and my passion for serving the community through student education remained central,” she said. “I believe Brightmont excels at this, operating on the core philosophy that every single student deserves to be seen, known, and supported with an individually tailored learning plan. Private School Specializing in One-to-One Instruction for 1st-12th Grade Students National — In recognition of Special Education Day, Brightmont Academy is celebrating the educators who dedicate their careers to empowering students with unique learning needs. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, about 7.3 million students in the United States receive special education services, accounting for roughly 15% of all public-school students. These students benefit greatly from individualized attention, compassionate instruction, and specialized support—core values that Brightmont Academy provides through its one-to-one teaching model. One educator who embodies this commitment is Carol Buresh, Special Education Administrator at Brightmont’s Barrington campus. Buresh has played a vital role in ensuring that students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) receive the tailored support they deserve. “I work mostly behind the scenes, supporting students with an IEP and their teachers. I interact with students and staff, as well as their home school personnel. I help with placement and intake for District students, attend meetings, complete paperwork, and ensure compliance.” Buresh began her journey with Brightmont working virtually with students in Seattle before transitioning to support Illinois campuses. Beyond her administrative responsibilities, she also oversees professional development for special education teachers. “The people at Brightmont are what make it special,” she added. “Barbara, the Barrington Campus Director, has assembled such a great group of teachers. While I’m often behind the scenes, I love coming in weekly to interact with the students. It’s all about relationships!” Brightmont is currently seeking dedicated special education teachers to join its growing team, especially at campuses in Illinois and Arizona. “The atmosphere here is so positive, and it’s a flexible schedule,” said Buresh. “As a special ed teacher at Brightmont, you get the best of most worlds - little lesson planning but a lot of ability to modify and individualize instruction. There is very little IEP and related paperwork, as I do most of it. There are a lot of opportunities to get to know students, build a relationship with them, and help to move them forward and see improvements.” Brightmont Academy’s model allows educators to focus on what matters most—personalized teaching and student growth—without the burdens often associated with large classroom environments. Brightmont Academy is located in nine states and is currently accepting enrollments. Brightmont Academy is an accredited private school that provides one-to-one instruction. Lady refusing to get out of bed
By Barb Farland November 26, 2025
It’s a Monday morning and, as usual, Nora awakens to the chime of her phone alarm. It’s time to get ready for school, but Nora’s parents have a hard time remembering a drama-free morning when she didn’t dawdle, complain of a stomach ache, become really emotional, etc. In fact, Nora hasn’t ridden the bus in two months and has been marked tardy a whopping 21 times. Pair these incidents with six full-day absences this semester, and Nora’s parents feel more than frustrated. They’re legitimately concerned about Nora’s mental health and overall well-being. And they should be. Nora is among the 2-5 percent of students nationwide who struggle with school refusal—and it’s not to be taken lightly. What is school refusal? What does it look like? And how can families address the issue of school refusal and overcome its characteristic behaviors and consequences? This is what we know…

Private School in Miami Specializing in One-to-One Instruction for 1st-12th Grade Students Miami, FL — Brightmont Academy is furthering its mission to strengthen students’ academic foundations by offering personalized tutoring and skill-building programs supported by Florida’s Step Up scholarship programs. These scholarships provide funding for K-12 families, covering options such as private school tuition, tutoring, and educational enrichment. According to the organization, over 1 million scholarships have been funded, and more than 98.9% of donated funds go directly to scholarships. Brightmont continues to see increasing interest as families recognize the impact of customized, one-to-one instruction. “Word of mouth has been powerful,” said Monica Torres, Campus Director at Brightmont Miami. “Parents, therapists, and professionals are not only learning about Brightmont Academy but also seeing firsthand the impact on children. The benefits of one-to-one learning speak for themselves, and families want that level of support.” Through Step Up scholarships, eligible students and families can apply scholarship funds toward tuition, tutoring, and skill-building programs at Brightmont. “Students with Step Up scholarships—whether through Unique Abilities (UA) or the Personalized Education Program (PEP)—can use those funds to support their academic growth,” said Torres. “Families may apply the funds toward tuition, tutoring, and skill-building programs.” Brightmont’s programs are designed to help students catch up, build stronger academic skills, or advance beyond their current level—all through individualized instruction. “Skill building helps students both catch up and move ahead,” Torres explained. “Many are behind grade level, preparing for the SAT, aiming to boost their grades, or simply want stronger academic skills. One-to-one instruction ensures each program is personalized to meet students where they are and help them reach the next level.” Brightmont has observed strong results: only 20 hours of one-to-one instruction can help a student improve by approximately half a grade level in reading, writing, or math. With scheduling available after school, on teacher-planning days, during spring break, and through the summer, the school ensures flexibility for busy families.
